Runners Shin Splints Easing Up Tense Leg Muscles

Elaine,

I have a question about a person who suffers with shin splints. He is a very young runner (17 yrs old) and troubled so much that his training is reduced to aquatic running only.

Q. Is there something associated with this and what is there to look for - other than working with him? I wondered whether tightness in the calf and hamstrings may be associated with this condition. His calf and hamstring muscles are rock hard. Foot alignment problems and imbalance are also a concern, but is there a person he should see to help him diagnosis this? I was told he works very hard and much to his mom’s dislike pain and treatment are getting expensive. She has tried acupuncture, rest and other suggestions from medical personnel.

I had his mom look online at EPM for products and asked her to have him look it over and call with any questions. Are there any tips I should mention on EPM – or any other routines to use in conjunction with EPM for his condition? I also can have him look at other therapies perhaps. I personally have had loads of success with trager.com..this along with EPM has been the only relief for the QL (quadratus lumborum) muscle that has been irritated since the injury in 1983.

Thanks.

Hi Albert

Good to hear from you and I look forward to working with you again. As for this young person with shin splints, your observations give you the answer as to what he needs to do. His leg muscles are tight so when he runs, the shock of his movements are all landing in his shins.

This can become chronic and of course painful. It is very common. He MUST ease up the tension in his legs so that he can feel the difference in his running afterwards. Simply beginning to use the balls under the back of the pelvis and down the legs is a must. If you

are working with him you can guide him to use the correct pacing. Obviously this might seem ineffective to him at first. Nevertheless it is his overworking of his muscles that is preventing his body from naturally recovering on a day to day basis.

Each day he adds more and more effort and tension to his workouts and he gets less and less satisfaction. The pendulum has swung one direction and he has to stop holding it there and let it swing the other way. That means he needs to allow his muscles to release. That understanding is thru the weight and the breath. It almost doesn't matter which ball placement he does. He needs to have an expereince that will begin to lead him to another wayof working. The sssss sound will guide his responses. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Hope this helps.

Elaine

I have a similar concern-- I'm a ballet dancer with tight leg and hip muscles, trying to recover from a stress fracture in my ankle. I tried putting the balls under my calves and Achilles, but it doesn't have the magic effect of the hip releasing exercises. Is there a special trigger point to release tension in the lower legs? Like many dancers I've used tennis balls to massage the places that hurt, but pressing where it hurts seems the opposite of your method. I am so excited that your balls are something proactive can do while I stay off my ankle.

Great questions. When you have the hips on the ball you have a significant weight there. In other words it’s just more obvious than a person’s ankle. This is where if you are really true to the Body Formula, feeling the weight and letting gravity lead you with the breath, you will begin to have a similar experience of letting go as you do with the hips. Be aware it may not be the bells and whistles but it will be significant . This is an important part of the body to be flexible since it must have a sense of “give” to accommodate the bend and release of everyday movements and especially dance. I hope this helps. Give it a little time and see if you can give this part of your body a chance to speak. It will feel different. Go on and off to feel the weight on or off. Its different. Perhaps start behind the calves and gradually go lower.

Hi Elaine,
I just got aa copy of your book,The Miracle Ball Method, but it came without the balls.
I suffer from Fibromyalgia--all over my body, pain in my left knee and left shin , chronic, caused by a fall which shifted a long metal post in my shin whch is there to anchor the artificial knee, deterioration of several discs in my lower back, the pain down my arms and across my chest that you describe in your book, pain in the front and top of my shoulders-----where is there NOT pain?? Naturally I don't have a big income--have just been off work since March for another knee replacement operation and am suffering complications after a fall.
My question, are the balls made out of miracle foam, or plastic, and inflated or out of heavy rubber balloon type material that gives when blown up.
I may have to use whatever balls I can find for now---I am thinking of soft plastic blown up balls, maybe 4 '' at the pet store.
I just can't wait to get started.
Your method seems to make a lot of sense to me and I am tired of pills--codeine contin, tylenol 4, celebrex, cymbalta, lorazepam, and senna and ducosate to keep things regular.
Maybe if your method really helps me, I can get off these meds which cause drowsiness, memory loss, sleeping in, sweating, constipation...they are killing me!
Any suggestions,
Kind regards,
Angela

They are $1 at the pet store, maybe not the exact balls you had in the kit, but could I make do with them untillmaybe someone gets me the right balls for Christman? I just want to start dealing with my pain and start the new year and my 6oth birthday off right. I have been suffering pain since 1986
I just can't wait to get started.

Maybe if yor method really helps, I can get off these meds which cause drowsiness, memory loss, sleeping in, sweating, constipation...maybe I can get out of the slow lane and start living again before I get too old.
Thank you Elaine for giving me hope again!

Hi Angela,

It is not recommended, and also not safe, to use any other ball but those that come with the Miracle Ball Method book. I would suggest returning the product where it was purchased and telling them it is incomplete; in exchange, they should provide you with the complete kit (2 balls and 1 book). I also sell individual balls on my website (www.elainepetrone.com) and am offering 10% off your entire order in December.
I understand what being in constant pain feels like, and I hope this method will find you relief. Don't worry about doing the entire book in one day, find certain movements that work for you and stay with them for a few days. Always focus on the breath and bringing oxygen to the muscles. The ball will help bring your attention to the muscles causing you pain.
All the best to you,

Elaine
